Getting Started with a Learning Specialist
We always start out the first several sessions doing informal assessing, school data collection, and building a positive relationship with new students. It’s important to figure out how students learn, their strengths, and academic weaknesses that are getting in the way of their academic and emotional progress. We will evaluate your student’s reading skills and develop a personalized reading program for them. All of this is important in beginning to help a student develop their reading skills.
It is truly amazing to see the incredible progress students make when they receive individualized instruction, attend intensive tutorials, and are given the right academic curriculum at their level.
Our Instructional Approach
We can help your student with reading skills no matter their reading level. We will meet your student where they are at and improve their reading fluency, vocabulary knowledge, and reading comprehension skills. We will also increase student’s success in content-area classes, especially where advanced reading skills are needed to understand concepts and content-specific vocabulary.
My tutorial instruction is explicit, direct, systematic, and science-based. Instruction is individualized for each student; we rotate students throughout the session with direct instruction, independent practice, educational applications, and some processing and motivational breaks as needed. We also focus on teaching students critical character traits that help make students more successful in the classroom (perseverance, problem solving, task initiation, better study habits, and self-advocacy.)
Lastly, we do a lot of work with executive functioning skills and teaching students organization, planning, follow through, etc. Middle school is a critical time for honing these skills, as they are learning to tackle multiple classes, teachers, and increased expectations.
